Harvesting rainwater is easy and can save you using water from the tap, in turn you will pay less on your water bill. There are different ways of collecting rainwater, the most common one is the rain water barrel, the water can be saved from the running down-pipes in to the barrel from the roof of the house. Other rainwater saving methods are collecting water in to large water tanks or making water tanks in to the ground using brick and mortar or ready made water tanks buried in the ground and later water can be pumped up for use in the garden or washing. Rainwater can even be used for drinking when properly filtered and purified. In some countries rainwater is saved in large ponds where fish is kept and people use the same water for washing, bathing and to water the crops.

The best way to conserve water is to use only the amount that is required, For the garden plants, watering is required on a regular basis and plants may need a lot more water specially in the hot sunny days. Water saved in the barrels from rain can be of good use to water the plants. Water barrels can be closed or opened topped, it is best to use the closed top barrels as the open top water barrels can collect dirt insects and falling leaves which can lead to growth in algae, and means frequent cleaning.
Rainwater barrels comes in different shapes and sizes, some are designed to be buried in the ground and others are for use above the ground usually next to the down pipes running down from the roof of the house .The water barrels can be decorated to blend in with the existing surroundings and will add charm to the garden.
